Championship Series 2020 – Recap Online Qualifier 1

Friday, March 27, 2020 was the first Online Qualifier of the GamePros Hearthstone Championship Series 2020. It’s good to see a lot of registrations, familiar faces but definately a lot of new players. Fun detail: the top 3 of the Hearthstone Championship Series 2019 were all back to compete.

Different than before

Because of the whole Corona (COVID-19) virus we as organisation had to improvise a little for this Online Qualifier. Usually the whole crew meets up on one location, but with the current measures this is not possible. Too bad, because next to the social interaction it’s important to manage the stream and communication amongst the team. Luckily our team managed to setup the stream despite some of the technical difficulties.

Hearthstone Ashes of Outland

Not so Standard

At exactly 19:00 the first round started after all participants had half an hour to check in. Because of the Hearthstone update of March 26, some players had to change the deck which they already handed-in. This update brought a number of (much used) cards to the so-called Hall of Fame and were no longer part of the “standard” set within Hearthstone. And as some may have guessed, during our Hearthstone Qualifier only “Standard” cards are allowed.

Fate decided that one of the first matches was the final from 2019. The Belgian SMOrc vs Disciple from the Netherlands. Both skilled and experienced players, however this time Disciple proved to strong for SMOrc. This contrary to the Hearthstone Championship Series final of 2019 which was won by SMOrc at the time. Along side these players we saw Hearthstone veteran Mcmkiller play, he struggled against newcomer Trebzilla. Crumble was the first player who, after a fierce battle against jkirek, secured a spot in the final of this Online Qualifier.

Hearthstone Ranked mode

The battles in the Losers Bracket continued for a while. The eventual winner would go head to head against Crumble for the highly sought after first place. The winner of a Hearthstone Qualifier will get 20 euros of Battle.net credit and earn maximum points for the GamePros Hearthstone Championship Series Ranking 2020.

Tournament progress

In the overview below you’ll find all matches played during the Online Qualifier 1 including the results.

The final

Crumble was our first finalist, he hadn’t lost and match and earned himself a spot in the final through the Winners Bracket. And you can’t play a final alone and there had to emerge a winner from the Losers Bracket. Eventually the battle was between jkirek and Goudhout, where jkirek eventually emerged as victor (2-0)

The final of the first Online Qualifier of the GamePros Hearthstone Championship Series 2020 was Crumble vs jkirek. They already played a round against each other and Crumble only lost one match against jkirek. So this proved to be a thrilling final!

And it was. Both players went all in but in the end Crumble proved the stronger competitor and won the final with a 2-0 victory. The casters said it before during the stream, Crumble was ready to rumble!

Overview participants and places
